Recognize Counterfeit FB4 | Pangolin Laser Systems

Recognize Counterfeit Pangolin Hardware

Flattery is the highest form of praise – or so the saying goes. And the rumors are true. There are counterfeit versions of Pangolin hardware and software floating around – including knock-offs of both FB3QS and FB4.

Producing, selling, distributing or working with counterfeit products is theft. It is also a direct violation of the Pangolin license agreement. We are taking extremely robust measures, to protect the integrity of our intellectual property, and to protect the investment our legitimate customers have made into our brands.

If you work with a counterfeit device, you are at great risk. All counterfeit hardware eventually fails, and when it does it may also result in the termination of legitimate hardware and software in your setup. So be careful.

How to protect yourself

  • Only purchase Pangolin products from approved Pangolin resellers.
  • Unsure of who those are? Ask! Email sales@pangolin.com, and we’ll connect you with a local partner, or work to serve you directly.
  • Do not buy our products on sites including Alibaba, eBay, Ali Express, etc. Chances are, that you are purchasing a counterfeit device.
  • Do not rent from – and do not rent to – companies you believe may be working with counterfeit devices, or who have purchased equipment from entities involved with the production, sales, or distribution of counterfeit hardware.

How to recgonize counterfeit FB3QS

This is not a guaranteed solution! Counterfeits are always evolving, it is best to get in touch with us directly if you're worried about a potiential counterfeit.

The FB3 boxes themselves are pretty hard to tell apart, but there is one subtle difference which can be seen from the outside, having to do with the USB cable. The difference is shown in the pictures.

The way that the metal is formed and folded on the USB connector makes a difference that can be seen from the outside. It is subtle, but visible. Genuine units have two metal plates on the bottom the fold in such a way that the gap between the metal plates form a visible line in the middle.

On counterfeit/pirate units, there is no gap, and instead if you hold the FB3 at an angle and look closely, it appears that there is a “notch” in the bottom of the connector. This might be clearer in the picture below, where the boards were removed from the packaging.

How to recgonize counterfeit FB4

This is not a guaranteed solution! Counterfeits are always evolving, it is best to get in touch with us directly if you're worried about a potiential counterfeit.

Pirates have done a very good job at disgusing counterfeit devices, but there are things that you can try to help recongize if your FB4 is counterfeit or not. You should always remain cautious and make sure you're purchasing from approved resellers.

  • Check the surface of the FB4. The surface of the counterfeit device is slightly worse.
  • Overall fit and finish of the cutouts are sloppy and not professional.
  • The encoder kob is hard plastic instead of being rubberized.
  • A fake FB4 cannot retain settings without an SD card present. If you remove the SD card and the settings on the FB4 are not retained, there is a chance you have a counterfeit FB4.
